The largest cultural project in history

Trnava 2026 Trnava 2026

We have been waiting for 13 years

The European Capital of Culture 2026 is a great chance for Trnava and we have been waiting for it for 13 years. Cities that have won the ECOC title in the past have experienced a restart of culture that has pumped up the domestic art scene, attracting people and investment.

In Trnava, culture is a natural part of life. It shapes us and our relationships, makes us sensitive to our surroundings and to ourselves. According to our survey, people of Trnava consider themselves culture lovers. That is why we see great potential in the European Capital of Culture 2026 project. It is a great energy and stimulus, thanks to which we can grow culturally, mature and realize our cultural ambitions together in a much shorter time and improve the international image of the city.

Two rounds in front of us

The condition for obtaining the title is to succeed in front of the committee  with a quality candidate project, the so-called bidbook. In two rounds, we will present not only our ambitions and dreams, but also a credible action plan on how to achieve them. Therefore, we approached experts from the field of art and culture, representatives of the institutions of the city and the region and the heads of the Trnava communities. We have also invited international experts to help us direct the project correctly. It is a pleasure to watch the creative energy of the team accumulate and join forces.

We handed over the first bidbook on December 15, 2020, let's keep our fingers crossed! At the same time, we are creating the historically first strategy for the development of culture and cultural policy in Trnava.

CULTURAL ESPRESO

Michal Klembara Trnava 2026

"Winning the title will help us significantly improve the quality of culture in Trnava and launch cultural tourism. It will bring new opportunities for all the inhabitants of the city and we will also help each other in areas such as education, public space and the environment. In this case, culture is not just about art and culture in the narrower sense, but about the overall development of the city and the region. "

Michal Klembara
Project program coordinator

Zuzana Hekel Trnava 2026

"I would like to thank to the ECOC team, a wider range of people, who take part in cultural events and thus stimulate its dramaturgy. I am thinking in particular of young people - pupils, students, but also my peers, people of working age, people who live and work in Trnava, but they rather go downtown for gastronomy than for culture. The ECOC could help us a lot if we set up the project meaningfully. "

Zuzana Hekel
Director of the Ján Palárik Theater in Trnava

Peter Kadlic Trnava 2026

"Working on a project allows us to look at culture from different perspectives and think about it in an unconventional way. We are increasingly aware that the development of our city and region can not be reduced only to economic parameters. It is also important to reconcile work and private life, leisure time and quality of life. "

Peter Kadlic
Project manager for the Trnava self-governing region

Zuzana Čaputová Trnava 2026

"Just the aspiration for the title leads and motivates cities to look at their development from a different perspective, so I believe it is a very good project for the city."

Zuzana Čaputová
President of the Slovak Republic

Peter Cagala Trnava 2026

"Even if we do not win the title in the end, no investment, whether human or financial, will be wasted. The project will at least be able to materialize itself into a cultural strategy and define exactly what Trnava should be like in 2026. We can also answer the question: "What problem can culture solve in our city?"

Peter Cagala
head of the ECOC project

Marija Gabriel Trnava 2026

"The European Capital of Culture initiative brings people together and highlights the role of culture in promoting the values on which our European Union stands: diversity, respect, tolerance and openness. A successful capital of culture is accessible and useful to its citizens. "

Marija Gabriel
European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth

November 2020

Meetings, analyses and a lot of writing

Preparations culminate. We put together the bid book like a big puzzle - chapter by chapter. The Commission has already seen more than hundreds of European city bid-books, so we are trying to think of every detail. We consult everything with experts. We are constantly at Zoom, Teams, only occasionally cooling off on the terrace with take-away coffee.

It is a difficult period, but we are still talking - Trnava has such a chance once every 13 years - we have to put the maximum into the project.

And a little more;)
